Unable to use Central Deployment Tool 1.8

I had never tried CDT myself as i have no environment where it would make sense, and spent my time on other topics. But now, rather per chance, i tried CDTs very simple first steps and failed completely:

No - i did not want try an advanced (Deployment Plan) usage of CDT !

Can anyone tell me what i do wrong ?

From the CDT admin guide: 

You must first configure a mail notification server on the Gaia OS of the Management Server (see the Gaia Administration Guide for your version):

Where	Instructions
In Gaia Portal	Perform these steps: In the left navigation tree, click System Management > Mail Notification. In the Mail Server field, enter the IP address or hostname of the Mail Server that receives the e-mails. For example: mail.example.com In the User Name field, enter the user name on the Mail Server that receives the e-mails. For example: user@mail.example.com Click Apply.
In Gaia Clish	Perform these steps: Connect to the command line. Log in to the Gaia Clish. Configure the IP address or hostname of the Mail Server that receives the e-mails (for example, mail.example.com😞 HostName> set mail-notification server <IP Address or HostName of Mail Server> For example: mail.example.com Configure the user name on the Mail Server that receives the e-mails (for example, user@mail.example.com😞 HostName> set mail-notification username <UserName on Mail Server>@<Domain Name> For example: user@mail.example.com Save the changes: HostName> save config Examine the configuration: HostName> show mail-notification server HostName> show mail-notification username

As a matter of fact, I don't thing the mail setting is what's blocking you. Did you setup a package to install? this is a must for the basic mode.

Yes, this is CLI - without the list of existing packages in CentralDeploymentTool.xml, we only get errors.

I would prefer to have this pre-configured in the template like :

But now it does work...

it should look like this:
./CentralDeploymentTool -generate -candidates=r80.csv -deploymentplan=r80-upgrade.xml

This really helped my getting to the bottom of why it the -generate file.csv wasnt working. Looking in further detail in the admin guide I found an example configuration (See below). I have yet to figure out where to get the PreScript and PostScript files from. They don't need to be in the file for you to get candidate list. The only two I found I had to have in there were the CPUS and PackageToInstall path.
