Kernel Module

Hi ..

Today I was checking the term Kernel Module and it is defined as

" Kernel modules are pieces of code that can be loaded and unloaded into the kernel upon demand. They extend the functionality of the kernel without the need to reboot the system."

So considering this can we say that checkpoint firewall kernel is Kernel Module loaded to Redhat Linux  Kernel  as base ?

Also when we see the term checkpoint kernel or checkpoint firewall module, Inspect Module, Inspection engine ... these are interchangeable, right ?

There is a Linux kernel based on RHEL, but it is not a stock kernel.

There are kernel modules that we load on top of that which perform specific tasks.

There are also user level processes that perform specific tasks as well.

So the way you describe it is not entirely correct. 

The terms you mention might have slightly different meanings depending on context, but they generally refer to the same thing.

Thanks for the reply it was helpful, I need little more information to build a complete picture about checkpoint kernel.

Could you please tell little more about checkpoint kernel ?

There is no one thing you can point to and say: "that's the Check Point kernel."

It's a collection of kernel modules that run in kernel space as well as processes that run in user space.
