There is a FAQ document: https://www.checkpoint.com/downloads/training/check-point-certification-faq.pdf
For your specific question, it says:
Q: My R77 CCSE certification has already expired. Do I need to start over with CCSA R80 to update to CCSE R80?
A: Actually, you don’t. Even though your certification has expired, the eligibility for updates to the latest version has not. If you ever held a CCSE certification, you are eligible for the Update exam.

Uh, sorry, it seems I have misread your question before.
In order to certify as CCSE, you have to have a valid CCSA.

Hi Val,
as far as I understand the CCSA does not have to be vaild.
I understood that one must have a CCSA certification in order to take the CCSE exam but the CCSA can be expired.
My CCSA will expire on 03.07.20 and I plan to take the CCSE exam somewhen in September this year. So this should be possible. Do you agree? Otherwise please let me know because I will be in a very hurry then... 😉
