Email Status: Skipped, Reason:Timeout exceeded. Email would be bypassed.

Hi,

We experienced some network issues earlier this week during which some emails were not received. 

The email status is Skipped.

The Last Failure Reason is Timeout exceeded. Email would be bypassed.

I'm trying to understand what happened exactly to those emails. Were they simply dropped? Was a bounced back msg sent to the sender?

Anything I can check to get more details?

Sounds like they might have been dropped, to me anyway. Do you have any other logs apart from emails being skipped?

In SmartView. I went through /var/log/maillog and found that it did try to send a NDR but failed due to network/DNS issues.

Those logs suggests the messages were lost because they could not be delivered.

Yeah that's what we figured as well. We're looking at bumping the Maximum delay time in the MTA settings.

If I were you, I would open TAC case to confirm all this, but what Phoneboy said makes total logical sense to me.
