Upgrade options to R80.40

Hi all,

We have an important "installation base" of security gateways with R80.30, some with R80.20 and still a few with R80.10. All of them with kernel 2.6 since they've been migrated from older versions and most of them VE, only about ten are CP Appliances.

We're planning in the next months to have them all on R80.40 (or even later on R81), so I'm doing some tests with a lab environment, an R80.20 cluster.

Things are not going smooth. 🙂 My first lazy option was downloading R80.40 through CPUSE and doing a clean-install. Well, the gateway just doesn't boot. It tries and goes straight to "revert to old image".

My other option has been an .iso install of the machine, but installation didn't start because it said anaconda didn't have enough memory. That could be since this gateway is a lab and it only has 2 Gb of memory.

Any ideas about why the failure with the CPUSE clean-install?

According to the release notes, a R80.40 GW needs at least 4GB RAM...

  Will appreciate if you send me the logs to analyze why the CPUSE installation on the gateway failed (run da_cli colelct_logs and send the resulted tgz to boazo@checkpoint.com)

  Also notice that if you upgrade the management to R81 you can easily upgrade all the gateways from 80.10, 80.20 and 80.30 to the new version - all by using the Smart Console!!

  No need to connect to the gateways.

Unfortunately I can't do that, since the failed gateway doesn't boot 😕

Above you wrote that the gateway just doesn't boot. It tries and goes straight to "revert to old image". I think it would boot with the old version because it can not run with 2GB RAM. Did you try to double the VM RAM already ? Then both install procedures should work....

Going that way. Unfortunately I'm not the manager of the ESX where this VEs are and the VMWARE team will take its time to do it. 🙂 I'll keep you informed

Hi all. Finally I managed to complete my tests, and yes, it was all about RAM. Once the VEs got 8 gigs, I could upgade them without any problems.
