Mac support for SmartConsole apps in R80
I'm using Mac for 90% of work. The only reason I have a 2nd machine (Windows PC) is to manage the firewall.
Will SmartConsole apps (SmartDashboard, Tracker, etc.) in R80 be able to run on Mac?

Hello Kurtis,
I've been working with the same Check Point partner for the last 14 years, even at the begining, I had a couple of customers working as firewall admins with Mac computers and the amount of people using it has increased over the years. The fact you have not worked on companies that would allow for IT staff to choose working with Mac instead of Windows, does not mean there is a not good amount of fw admins, consultants and support providers using it.

I agree 100% with Loukine on his comments. CP has told me for years that customers do not request Mac support so thus no income and thus no support. As a customer and I have asked for better Mac support for years. Hell, today, I would be happy with just Secondary Connect functionality on the Mac platform.
Additionally, this 'show me the money' attitude is not only reflected with Mac support but also with Linux support.
"We just don't see a large enough demand across the customer base. . ."
Doh! Of course you have no customer demand for these platforms as you have no software that can run on these platforms.
I believe. Do you?

lol, this has nothing to do the year. CP does not have enough skills to develop for Mac. Look at Capsule for Mac, for example. They cannot release anything that work as GA for at least the lat two years. And that is a simple single-function app. I would not expect anything close to SmartConsole to be released any time soon, unless CP goes completely client-less for FW management

I started using MACs (fanless MacPlus 😉 in 1984. I have used Macs ever since and my wife, too. But concerning my work with firewalls, i use a Win PC to be able to get the serial output from the GW. I know of no one that has accomplished that on a OS X machine yet, so i will also be happy with a Win Dashboard. And if we use the numbers from wikipedia for OS shares, we can see:
Place | Mobile system | Desktop system |
---|---|---|
1 | Android (73%) | Windows (83%) |
2 | iOS (20%) | OS X (13%) |
3 | Nokia (1%) | Linux (2%) |
4 | Windows (1%) | Chrome OS (1%) |

Hello Gunter,
It is in fact possible to have console access to any appliance (not only Check Point) from a OS X machine, using a regular USB/serial adapter (as in Windows), all you need is the correct driver. I have used this one with multiple USB/serial adapters with no problem:
PL2303_MacOSX_1.6.1_20160309.pkg
In regards of software, instead of Putty or Hyperterminal in Windows, You can try “ZTerm", among others, or just the native terminal client of your MAC, which you can run with the following command and is the easiest:
screen /dev/tty.usbserial
Moving to the numbers you provided, I wouldn’t consider 13% as a negligible amount of people.
Regards

for the correct hardware - and all of the USBtoSerial adapters i have on my desk only do support very special drivers. i do know that there is hardware supported on OS X, but sadly i never could buy one. But maybe my main problem only is that i do not use Amazon or Ebay naming ethical reasons for it and instead use the adapter form the shop around the corner...
