MDS upgrade CPUSE versus Advanced

Hi,

I'm having problems to understand the difference / use case.  When to choose which method?

Which advantage has the advanced mode? Can't see it in sk163814

CPUSE:

If the Primary Multi-Domain Server is not available, promote the Secondary Multi-Domain Server to be the Primary
Make sure the Global Domain is Active on the Primary Multi-Domain Server
Get the required Upgrade Tools on the Primary Multi-Domain Server
Upgrade the Primary Multi-Domain Server with CPUSE
Install the R81.10 SmartConsole
Get the required Upgrade Tools on the Secondary Multi-Domain Server
Upgrade the Secondary Multi-Domain Server with CPUSE
Update the object version of the Secondary Multi-Domain Server
Upgrade the Multi-Domain Log Servers, dedicated Log Servers, and dedicated SmartEvent Servers
Reconfigure the User and Device Management Server
Reconfigure the Log Exporter
Test the functionality on the Primary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server

ADVANCED

Install the Primary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server
Get the required Upgrade Tools on the Primary server
On the Primary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server, import the databases
Install the Secondary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server
Get the required Upgrade Tools on the Secondary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server
On the Secondary R81.10 Multi-Domain Server, import the databases
Install the R81.10 SmartConsole
Update the object version of the Secondary Multi-Domain Server
Upgrade the Multi-Domain Log Servers, dedicated Log Servers, and dedicated SmartEvent Servers

CPUSE in place upgrade creates a new partition, keeping the old version as fallback (could be deleted later after a successfull upgrade), and continues with fresh install using migrate_server export / import. So the difference is the needed HD space - CPUSE needs 2 times the space of Advanced Upgrade...

CPUSE is in place upgrade and advance mode is as good as creating a new MGMT and restoring the database . I would prefer to choose cpuse when data base size is small and if it simple management server

For MDS or for a large and critical data base i will prefer to chooses advance mode .

in place update  :

1. Fast and easy 

2. No need of hardware/vm  

2. Suitable for simple and small setup

 

Advance mode :

1.  Low production impact 

2. Easy to roll back

3. Need a separate VM/hardware 

4. More reliable

I am also trying to decide whether to perform an Advanced Upgrade or CPUSE upgrade.  I've used CPUSE method in the past without any issues.  We are planning to move from R80.40 to R81.10.

  • MDS - Smart1 appliance
  • MLM - Open Server
  • SME - Open Server

In my experiences with upgrading MDS and similar boxes, I will always go with CPUSE over advanced upgrade.

Using advanced upgrade you will only get one day of indexed logs after import - quite an impact if you have 30 + CMAs where you want the audit logs to index back a few months... This may also happen on a CPUSE upgrade to R81 or R81.10 as the indexing method was changed.
