Maestro Madness
Is it possible to change the name of a Check Point Multi-Domain Management Server? I don't see any reference to this in the knowledge base.
I'm sure there's some way to do it.
What's the logic behind the request?
Curiosity more than necessity. I figured there was a way to do it too, but didn't see anything on SecureKnowledge, so I figured I'd ask the community! 😃
Hi.
You can change the name of a primary MDS.
export the database.
Install a clean take and configure the desired name in first time wizard.
import the database.
Thanks
Dan
Thanks Dan. I wasn't sure if the MDS ICA would need to be reinitialized after doing this since the hostname would no longer match the ICA. I am aware you can usually get away with this on a management server, but it's best practice.
Unfortnatately that isn't correct, when importing the full MDS database it changes the name back to the original even though hostname of the device is the new one. This could be done by exporting all the CMA's and importing them back into the fresh MDS
Thre is only the sk42071 Changing a Security Management (SmartCenter) Name. He starts with the line: Warning to Users and then has: If this is a Domain Management Server, enter the specific instance prior to performing these steps: mdsenv <DMS name or IP>
So we do not find a way here to rename the DMS, only its CMAs. But more information ias available about IP changes on MDS - see sk74020 How to change the IP address of Domain Management Server.
I would like to rename two things:
- External name of the MDS, which I believe I can just change the hostname as the internal Database hostname would not change.
- I have a VSX node that needs to be renamed.
In both cases the driver for doing this is site closure and relocation of hardware.
Any idea how to do this? The VSX node is clearly going to be more trickier.
I am doing the same think and i just add secondary MDS, i will switch from the primary MDS to secondary and i will delete the old one. After that, i will reinstall the new ACTIVE MDS and i will use new names of the MDS and CMA objects and again i will switch the priority and i will delete secondary MDS/CMAs.
