Beginner's questions: SmartConsole - Object Explorer - Host - Network Management

Dear mates,

ObjectExplorer-Host-NetworkManagement.PNG
I do have a beginner's question:
- is there any difference whether the host's IP is entered under the "General" tab or "Network Management"?

- Since the entry under "General" tab is mandatory, should we enter the first (main) IP there and any additional IP (range) under the "Network Management" tab?

- What is the primary use case of the "Network Management" tab given that it requires a subnet length entry while the IP under the "General" tab doesn't?

- Is it OK to enter subnet length=32 under "Network Management" tab for additional single IPs of a host?

Many thanks for answering!

The General tab is defining the primary IP address of your host object. If it has more than a single network interface, you define these IPs in the Network Management section.

To answer your questions:
1. If more than a single IP is in use on the host, define all IPs in the network management tab
2. You mostly need Network Management for GW objects, where it is being used to build topology
3. It is if you do not care about the topology of that object. Otherwise, it is not 🙂

Actually, Im fairly positive most people may not even know what you asked, so dont feel bad, because in my view, its NOT a beginner question at all. Either way, @_Val_ summed it up 100% correct. To sum it up in layman's terms, you ONLY care about network management tab IF your host has multiple NICs with different IPs assigned, otherwise, if its single IP, then just define it in general tab, thats it.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Andy
