R77.30 to R80.30 Management Server Upgrade Steps

Hello All,

I am planning to upgrade the Standalone Checkpoint Management Server from r77.30 to R80.20 using the migration methods. The guide mentions the following steps:

Workflow:

  1. Get the R80.20 upgrade tools
  2. On the current Standalone, run the Pre-Upgrade Verifier and export the entire management database
  3. Install a new R80.20 Standalone
  4. On the R80.20 Standalone, import the databases
  5. Install the R80.20 SmartConsole
  6. Upgrade the dedicated Log Servers and dedicated SmartEvent Servers
  7. Install the management database
  8. Install the Event Policy
  9. Install the Security Policy
  10. Test the functionality
  11. Disconnect the old Standalone from the network
  12. Connect the new Standalone to the network

Further below it is mentioned:

If you upgrade from R77.30 (or lower) version to R80.20, then the IP addresses of the source and target Standalone must be the same.

  • If you need to have a different IP address on the R80.20 Standalone, you can change it only after the upgrade procedure. Note that you have to issue licenses for the new IP address.

I am confused about the steps. In order to install the new Management Server and Connect it via SmartConsole,  We would need an IP address which needs to be same as old Management Server's IP. Does that mean I have to disconnect the old server before I begin the GAIA installation ?

Also upgrade verifier mentioned this :

The Database has Legacy Default Profiles.SmartCenterLegacy Default Profiles are not supportedThey will be deleted: Endpoint_Full_Access, Endpoint_Helpdesk, Endpoint_RemoteHelpAndMediaRecovery, Mgmt-RWWarning

What do I need to do to rectify this before the upgrade ?

Regards

C

Hi

1) You can have a standalone machine with a different IP address,  preform the import and run initial tests and sanity to see that everything is working properly

When you have completed these steps you can shut down the old Standalone machine, change the IP address of the new one, and replace the machines.

If you want to take another precautionary step you can change the IP address in a closed lab environment, connect with SmartConsole and make some local tests before replacing the machines. This will also save some downtime.

2) The Pre-Upgrade Verifier message is a Warning. This means you can address it before the upgrade (import) or afterwards. In this case the Endpoint Permission Profiles will be deleted. Unless they are used there is nothing special for you to do.

First of all, are you moving to R80.20 or R80.30? The title and the text are in contradiction.

For the Installation of GAIA there is no problem to use a different address on the new machine.

Lets assume the original SMS is on 10.10.10.10 and 10.10.10.15 and 10.10.10.20 are not used.
Install the new server on unused IP 10.10.10.20

When ready to do the migration:

  1. run cpstop on the original SMS
  2. run the migrate export on the original SMS
  3. change the IP of the original SMS to 10.10.10.15
  4. change the IP of the new SMS to 10.10.10.10
  5. run the First Time Wizard to finish the install
  6. run the migrate import on the new SMS
  7. Start the new SMS and run your tests

This will allow you to easily switch back to your original SMS by just running cpstop on the new machine and changing both IP's back to what they were and run cpstart on the old machine.

Thanks Tal. Would there be something that I need to do for licensing when I change the IP address ?

Initially you will have the 15 day Trial Period License.

Once you change the IP to the original IP address you can use the license you had on the source machine.
