Hey All,
I was wondering is there a way to recover the drive so it can be reused after it was encrypted with CP Endpoint Encryption ?
The data isn't needed, We just need to reuse the hardware.
Easy, just format it
Doesn't allow for it to be formatted.
Keeps saying Task cannot be completed.
I've tried normal windows Device manager and Partition Magic. also tried on an Linux machine
That's odd. Try deleting all partitions on the drive and re-partition it again, before formating
Also tried that 😞
when trying to lean the disk with power shell it gives this :
DISKPART> clean
DiskPart has encountered an error: Incorrect function.
See the System Event Log for more information.
But so far nothing seems to be able to wipe it .
Could it be that the drive is damaged? Is it functional when used with encryption, such as, does it show a pre-boot message when you are trying to boot from it?
The Drive is fine :
DISKPART> detail disk
Realtek RTL9210 NVME SCSI Disk Device
Disk ID: {A58DC4BF-CCA3-4A1B-A43D-3B6E13C567FE}
Type : USB
Status : Online
Path : 0
Target : 0
LUN ID : 0
Location Path : UNAVAILABLE
Current Read-only State : No
Read-only : No
Boot Disk : No
Pagefile Disk : No
Hibernation File Disk : No
Crashdump Disk : No
Clustered Disk : No
Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 3 RAW Partition 476 GB Healthy
Volume 4 RAW Partition 499 MB Healthy Hidden
Volume 5 RAW Partition 100 MB Healthy Hidden
Try CLEAN command:
DISKPART > Select Disk > Select Partition > CLEAN
I would start with hidden partitions
DISKPART> clean
DiskPart has encountered an error: Incorrect function.
See the System Event Log for more information.
DISKPART>
Here is another suggestion from one of the forums:
Press SHIFT-F10
or hit 'repair' in from the Windows installation to open up the command line, then execute the diskpart
command and delete the partition, e.g.: list disk
, select disk 0
or any other identifying the correct disk, list partition
, select partition 1
, or the encrypted one , in case there are multiple partitions, then delete partition override
.
You can then resume the install procedure normally to repartition and format the drive.
DISKPART> select partition 4
Partition 4 is now the selected partition.
DISKPART> delete partition override
DiskPart has encountered an error: Incorrect function.
See the System Event Log for more information.
DISKPART>
You are not doing it as part of the Repair Windows install function, do you?
Sorry, yes went into the repair mode now.
It is running a format on the disk but going really slowly , Im sure it will fail.
Let's see 🙂
If is still doesn't work, look for a tool which can send the "secure erase" command to the drive. On most SSDs, this flushes the drive controller's cryptographic key and block table and generates new ones. On all SSDs, it should also run all the flash chips at high voltage briefly which flushes the data in all the flash cells. parted magic can do this.
DISKPART "clean all" should do just that, but it was failing, as far as I understand. Let's see if it can do the job from in the repair mode.
I found a lot of conflicting information about diskpart clean and diskpart clean all. Several sources say to expect it to take an hour per 300 GB. An ATA or NVMe secure erase command should take under ten seconds to wipe a whole SSD of any size.
Just an update on this : using Parted Magic didn't work I tried all options .
I just noticed the controller in your earlier 'detail disk' output. The RTL9210 is a controller to use a SATA or NVMe drive over USB. Is this a packaged USB drive, a USB enclosure you have put a SATA or NVMe drive into, or something else?
Hi ,
That is correct the NVMe drive is in a USB enclosure , the drive can be removed .
I can remove it and then try to format it.
It is actually in an Orico TCM2-C3 enclosure .
I will try a SATA enclosure by Orico also before direct into the MB.
(Orico Aluminium SSD Enclosure MS2TS-SV-BP), As a test
So just an update, I removed it from the case. Put it into a laptop.
Booted with parted magic and still no luck. I tried almost all options .
But It did manage to get rid of the partitions and only shows 1 now somehow .
Yea, sounds like you did everything possible at this point...
Maybe better open TAC case, so they can help you out further.
Seems like a case will need to be opened as nothing seems to work to recover the use of the hardware
