Endpoint Client upgrade from E82.10 to E88.00 fails, rolls back with BSOD "unmountable boot volume"

When attempting to upgrade E82.10 client to E88.00, the installation fails half way, rolls back and a dialog prompts to "reboot and try the install again". After rebooting the machine it gives a BSOD with unmountable boot error.   I can go fine to E87 though.

Anyone else experience this ?

Best bet here is to open a TAC case: https://help.checkpoint.com

So after testing in an isolated lab environment, I can confirm that e82.10 upgrade (on Windows 10 build 1909 and lower OS) to e88 fails with a zcomm zonelab dll error causing a rollback. The firewall blade is then seen to be stuck in initializing state. The installation prompts to reboot to try again. However upon reboot, the machine gives BSOD unmountable boot error. Support recommends uninstalling the old client completely and installing the e88 version fresh. Checkpoint articles indicate that upgrades from 81.10 to any higher version is supported but seems not to be the case here.

There's an issue that affects some older versions that is likely the cause here: https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk171213
