This is more of a Linux question than anything related to Gaia / Check Point

See here, for example: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/35851/whats-the-difference-of-dmesg-output-and-var-log-mess...

I would say /var/log/messages is more system logs and dmesages is more kernel logs.

Best,
Andy

dmesg:

  • Purpose: Displays kernel ring buffer messages.
  • Content: Contains messages related to kernel operations, hardware initialization, and driver activities.
  • Access: Directly accessed via the dmesg command.
  • Volatility: Temporary; messages are stored in memory and may be overwritten as the buffer fills.
  • Common Use: Troubleshooting hardware and driver issues, especially during boot.

/var/log/messages:

  • Purpose: General system log file.
  • Content: Contains a wide range of system messages, including boot logs, application logs, and other system activities.
  • Access: Viewed using text editors or commands like cat, less, or tail.
  • Persistence: Stored on disk; persists across reboots.
  • Common Use: Monitoring system events, diagnosing issues, and auditing.
