Threat Extraction adds mmmmmm to converted pdf

R80.3 cluster with MTA, TE, TX blades.  Protection Details show:

Protection Name: Extract potentially malicious content

Protection Type: Conversion to PDF

TE Activity: File couldn't be cleaned.  File was converted to PDF instead.

The file has multiple PDF pages, with random instances of "mmmmmmmm" placed on the pages.

Example:

This was a Docusign document.

Cause/solution?

My guess is a rendering bug of some sort. Recommend a TAC case.

There is an issue with fonts - saw a similar one with a designed company exclusive font that was not correctly replaced in the PDF. A workaround would be to replace the characters changed to m by such that can be included in the PDF.
