Is it normal for the disk usage to temporarily increase during an IPS update and then go back to normal after it's completed?

The IPS update file is approximately 22 MB, but it expands to around 170 MB when extracted, which might be what you're noticing. It should be deleted automatically after the update completes.

Then, are the update file sizes for other anti-bot, virus, application, etc., similar?

Not sure of the exact sizes of the updates, but they are likely a similar size.
