USB Firmware Upgrade 1430 Testing

Greetings

 

I am in the process of testing the ability of doing upgrades, backups/restores from the USB Ports.  Can anyone point me to a document that outlines do's and dont's.  With the low prices of USB devices it would seem logical to move storage of firmware and logs to USB device or a microSD. Any direction or comments would be welcomed.
