I still remember this like it happened yesterday. Some time back in summer of 2009, I was sitting at home watching TV and an advertisement came on with late Alex Trebek (host of Jeopardy) and it was about him talking to World Vision workers and poor kids in Africa (that particular segment was about Tanzania).
They showed such horrible living conditions so many children lived in and were asking for people to sponsor and help. That was so personal to me, because I lived in war myself and I know very well that side of life. I started tearing up, called the number on the screen and told the lady who answered to choose a kid I can sponsor, because I simply did not have strength to go online and pick one myself.
She choose a boy from Ecuador, which I sponsored for few years, then I sponsored a girl from Kenya, and now I had been sponsoring one from Indonesia for 7 years.
I can tell you that it makes me so happy and fullfilled when I see the letters those kids write back, because to them it means the world. The difference 50$ a month makes is just incredible.
I will finish by quoting what I heard someone say while ago that we wont be remembered once we are not alive any more by much money we had, if we drove an expensive car or if we always stayed at super fancy hotels or ate at most expensive restaurants but will be remembered by how many people we helped and how much we gave back to others.
That is SO, SO TRUE.
Here is an example of last letter I received just recently from my sponsored kid...to me, this is worth more than any money out there.
Anyway, apologies if any of this sounded cheesy or corny, but was on my mind, so wanted to share it.
Please, always be kind and nice to others!
