Have not seen this exact issue before, but checking file system integrity would be a good start - see sk92442

Alternatively if there is on-appliance backups made, you can try mount the VMDK's on another linux VM and retrieve them from /var/CPbackup/backups.  From there it's easy to do a new build and import.

First prize in my opinion would be to restore from external backup or VMware snapshot.
