Maestro Madness
Good afternoon. I have found another article on here from 2019 migration to new hardware - but it's a bit old and not applicable to r80.40 and above.
Basically, our existing Smart Event appliance has reached EOL and we would like to simply migrate the configuration (hostname, ip, database, rules) from our old appliance to our new 600-S appliance but I cannot find any articles on the subject.
Can anyone assist?
Thank you again!
BR,
Joe
What is the source version on your existing appliance?
What version is (or will be) on the 600-S?
Generally, this is done using an Advanced Migration, which is documented in the Installation and Upgrade Guide for the relevant target version.
This is explained a lot of times. Why not use e.g. the Installation and Upgrade Guide R81.10 ? https://sc1.checkpoint.com/documents/R81.10/WebAdminGuides/EN/CP_R81.10_Installation_and_Upgrade_Gui...
These instructions equally apply to:
Dedicated SmartEvent Server
For additional information related to this upgrade, see sk163814.
Good Afternoon G_W.
Sorry to dredge this post up again. I have been putting this migration off for the past month, but now that we are about to upgrade our security gateway cluster from R80.40 to R81.20, I'd like to cross this task off my list - especially since it needs to be done before the gateway upgrade.
I may be overthinking this project because we have a very small and simple environment.
We have a two-node active/standby cluster, a separate SMS running in VMware, and the exisitng Smart Event appliance running on a Smart-1 205. Our active log server is the Smart-1 205. Our backup logging server is the virtual SMS. Our configuration on the SmartEvent is pretty basic: We have two internal networks defined and a handful of rules that prohibit scans, ping sweeps, etc from external networks.
I want to keep the saved logs on the SmartEvent during the migration but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we lost them.
My goal is to bring up the new Smart-1 600s with my existing config, and any logs I currently have saved on the old appliance.
I'm thinking one thing I could do is temporarily change the logging server to my SMS server? Then change it back to the SmartEvent appliance when the migration is done.
I'm not sure why I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this.
The new SmartEvent appliance is already running R81.10. Do I skip the first-time wizard and manually configure the settings before the migrate-server import?
If you have time could you perhaps provide the high-level steps that I would take to get this new server up and running?
Thank you again!
If the hardware changes then you need to follow up the procedure to format the new device and restore the backup using migrate export and import command from old appliance.
It should be straight forward solution.
Why format a new appliance ? Install GAiA and CP SW for SMS, then perform FTW and migrate_server import.
That's true - really. However if his current version is something else and if appliance is shipped with latest one then backing up with ngm_upgrade package would be too complex and need thorough competency.
But I agree its not always advisable to format the appliance.
I never do format it - when performing fresh install, the CP installer will format and partition it for me 8)
