Ongoing take and GA take difference

Hello Experts.

I have already gone through the sk95746 that mentions the differences between ongoing take and GA take.

But can someone explain it it detail .

Is a GA take combination of all the ongoing takes ?

example last GA take for r80.30 is 228 and has got ongoing takes after that (323,335 and 336 ) . so when a GA take is available will is be a combination of the take 323,335 and 336 ?

why is the Ga take is available as recommendations and not ongoing takes

Regards,

Sijeel

GA stands for general availability. Those are fully tested and approved versions. Ongoing take is still in the QA  and approval process.

SK mentions "“Ongoing” release is in high quality and passed all Check Point release Criteria." but you have mentioned its still in QA and approval process. So ongoing take might not provide a sure shot solution to an issue as its still under QA and approvals.

Right - this is the difference between CP LAB tests and installation in productin environments ! Ongoing Take has the latest fixes included and is suggested if a customer has an issue fixed in this version. Usually, it takes 1 1/2 month for Ongoing to grow a GA Release.

Hi @Malik1

Every Jumbo take Check Point is releasing is an HF accumulator, meaning it will includes all the content from all previous takes.

To answer your specific question below – R80.30  Jumbo Take 336 includes all the fixes in Jumbo take 335 and 332 (and lower). Once We will declare R80.30 Jumbo take 336 as GA it means all the fixes are now GA.

With regards to your other question  - An “Ongoing” Jumbo is declared as “GA” following significant amount of this Jumbo installations in the field.

Ongoing takes I split in two types: Slow and Fast. Slow ones will bring some more fixes and even new features. Fast ones contain only "last-minute" fixes and they usually become GA in just few days after released as ongoing. There are exceptions of course but generally that's how it goes.

Quoted from Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator FAQ:

What is the difference between Ongoing Jumbo Hotfix Take and GA Take?
Ongoing - Early Adoption Take
GA - General Availability take

The Ongoing Jumbo Hotfix Take is usually becomes recommended for General Availability around 3-4 weeks post Ongoing Take release, unless there is a critical issue that was found in the Take. In such case, the Ongoing Take will be replaced with a new one.

Best practise is to ensure latest 'GA' release is installed, and only install 'ongoing' take if you have a specific bug fix or are advised to install by TAC.

I agree.

I tried to install ongoing take in production only once... 2 days later it was declared as buggy and removed from downloading. I was lucky as it didnt hit us with some serious issues, but still 🙂

After that, I am all the time waiting for GAs only.

Maybe "ongoing" takes can be considered as "Production EA", where end customers are "testing" it in production, as CP is not able to get such a huge feedbacks in their LABs.
