Old versions in /var/log/opt/ security gateway

Is it safe to delete the directories for previously installed Gaia versions in /var/log/opt/ on a security gateway?

For example my gateways are running R81.20 and I have directories for CPcvpn-R80.30, CPsuite-R80.40, etc.

I am looking to do this to increase space.

Yes, its 100% safe. I had done it with many clients before, never had an issue. Just to be on safe side, I would take backup and/or snapshot.

Symptoms

  • After performing an in-place upgrade from R80.X to a newer version (i.e. from R80.10 to R80.20), directories from the old version are not removed from /var/log/opt.

Cause

Soft links are created between log files from the pre-upgrade directories and the post-upgrade directories in order for SmartLog to be able to access pre-upgrade log and index files.

Solution

These folders should not be removed unless you no longer need access to log or index files that were created before the upgrade occurred.

These files are automatically removed by disk space management in the event that disk space thresholds are reached.
