Hey,

CheckPoint offers the software (currently "Gaia") which can be installed virtually or on a dedicated hardware.

If you use the dedicated hardware approach you have the options to install on a so-called open server or a CheckPoint appliance. The difference here is that CheckPoint appliances are dedicated devices which can be bought from CheckPoint and the open server way is basically a solution where you install the software on a non-CheckPoint device/hyper visor.

Here is a list of recommended/featured open server devices:

https://www.checkpoint.com/support-services/hcl/

And here is an overview of the different CheckPoint appliances:

You could compare the OS image itself with the ASAv solution and the CheckPoint appliance with the "standard" ASA/ASA-X (or FirePOWER with ASA) installation.

Regards,

Maik

Adding my two cents:

There is a file I use frequently. You can find it in the link https://www.checkpoint.com/downloads/product-related/comparison-chart/appliance-comparison-chart.pdf .

ps: thanks for the hint about the br-appliances.pdf

As I often remind customers, the name of the company is Check Point Software Technologies.

In the beginning, the only way to run our software was to install it on a server operating systems like SunOS, Solaris, Windows NT, AIX, and HP/UX.

These days, we use a single OS (Gaia) which can be run both on physical appliances and on virtual appliances that run in various Private/Public Clouds.

Gaia is a software running on appliance (virtual-physical) just like ASA/FTD. You can install ASA/FTD on cisco appliances. Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software is the operating system for the cisco ASA family. It delivers enterprise firewall capabilities for ASA devices in an array of form factors -standalone appliances, blades, virtual appliances- for any distributed network environment. Cisco Firepower Threat Defence (FTD) is a unified software image, which includes asa features and FIREPOWER features. FTD can be deployed on cisco firepower series appliances and ASA series appliances.

Check point GAIA is the next generation secure operating system for all check point appliances, open servers and virtualized gateways. Check point provides all sizes appliances for data center, enterprise, small business&brach office etc. But appliance names do not start with gaia like ASA -X firewall. That's not mean check point has no physical hardware appliance. The Gaia supports the full portfolio of check point software blades, gateway and security management products. Just like Maik Dummer said, you can read appliances brochure from the check point web site.
