Clarification When Upgrading to R82

Hi Mates,

From what I understood, in R82 UPPAK will be enabled by default.
Does this mean that if I upgrade from R81.20 to R82, the system will automatically switch to UPPAK?
Or, if my gateways are currently using KPPAK, will they remain on KPPAK even after upgrading to R82?

I know that the mode can be changed via cpconfig, but I’m trying to understand whether UPPAK will become the default standard for all R82.

According to R82 Performance Tuning Administration Guide:

  • During a clean installation, the Gaia First Time Configuration Wizard automatically configures SecureXL to work in User Mode (UPPAK) on Security Gateways that meet the requirements.

  • After an upgrade from R81.10 and lower versions, SecureXL works in Kernel Mode (KPPAK).

  • SecureXL does not change its mode automatically if the hardware specifications of a Security Gateway change, and now they meet the requirements.

I think that will also apply for you upgrade, i.e. it will not change your setting

Hey bro,

I can tell you based on my lab tests, whichever mode is on R81.20, it will stay the SAME after R82 upgrade.

Best,
Andy

Which hardware / appliance model?

UPPAK is default on a clean install if the hardware requirements support it.

We’re planning to upgrade to R82 from R81.20 on most of our gateways, which are 3000-6000-7000 appliances.
We also have some 9000 appliances currently running UPPAK.

UPPAK isn't relevant for most of those at this stage refer:

Just checked one of my lab fws, it was on UPPAK in R81.20, same on R82 as well and it was upgraded few months ago.
