what happens when you restart checkpoint services?
By typing cpstop;cpstart does it break all the existing connections on the firewall? so does it affect production traffic?

It not only stops all processes but it unloads the security policy and disables IP Forwarding.
It very much impacts production traffic and should only be done in a maintenance window.
