NGFW payload

Can firewall like checkpoint look into the actual payload like user card details? Can it have the visibility if we start doing SSL decryption and start inspecting the actual pay load itself ? I was asked this weird question and my answer was without SSL decryption it should not be able to look at the actual payload.

Any opinions ?

Depends on the transport protocol used. In the case of encrypted communication e.g. HTTPS or QUIC the gateway typically must terminate the SSL/TLS to inspect inside it.
