Tip: Web SmartConsole Replace Has Improved

Most of us are familiar with the Replace feature in SmartConsole. However, until recently, it was mainly useful for replacing references in policies.

Today I tested the Web SmartConsole and noticed that the Replace functionality has improved significantly.

Successfully replaced gateway objects in:

  • Network objects
  • Host objects
  • VPN Communities
  • Network Groups
  • Policy Installation Target

Still not supported in:

  • Gateway object references (for example, Identity Sharing)
  • Interfaces of the Gateway being replaced (this limitation was already expected)

Windows SmartConsole comparison

In my tests, the Windows SmartConsole was only able to perform the replacement for:

  • Network Groups

Why is this useful?

In my opinion, this is a great improvement that can save a lot of manual work in day-to-day administration.

One scenario where this is especially helpful is during a Single Gateway to Cluster migration. After creating the new Cluster object, we usually need to replace the old Single Gateway object everywhere it is referenced. Having Web SmartConsole automatically update more object types reduces manual effort and lowers the risk of missing a reference.

There are still some limitations, but it's great to see the Web SmartConsole continuing to evolve.

Has anyone tested the Replace feature on other object types? I'd be interested to hear what you've found.
