Best Practice regarding Files to exclude from scanning

Is there a reference out there regarding commonly excluded files and directories (folders) that are commonly skipped for regular scans of Windows and Linux workstations and servers?

Some vendors have recommendations regarding exclusions. They are not specific but offer some guidance.
