What is the max polling interval to the API?

I am working with a developer to help customers maximize their use of the API and he wanted to know:

A. How much overhead is added by API calls and

B What the maximum polling interval would be

I imagine it depends on the API call.

Read calls are pretty minimal, write/publish calls are a different story.
