Open Server Failed Mgmt Upgrade (R81.10 to R81.20)

Hail mary before blowing the system away but checking if anyone has seen this before.  We're using a Dell PowerEdge R730 for a management server running R81.10.  Went through the normal Web GUI upgrade to R81.20 and it reboots but then fails to load the OS.

When it's booting I see three Virtual Disks and it's set to boot off the RAID controller.  It fails and goes to a 'enter username' prompt which I hit enter twice and then it says Entering rescue mode and prompt is: grub rescue>

I did do a full backup prior to the upgrade but would be nice to know why it bombed out.

All of my open server upgrades have gone perfectly, which makes me suspect it's something about the boot ROM on the server. R81.20 involves upgrading GRUB from a version which only supports BIOS to a version which supports UEFI, so maybe the boot ROM got confused.

That said, you should probably blow the box away and rebuilt it from scratch at R81.20 anyway. Check the output of 'fdisk -l'. Does it contain the text "does not start on physical sector boundary"?

Only in grub rescue and get a unknown command.

Did you involve CP TAC already?

Yes.  We were unable to recover the GRUB and are in the process of rebuilding the server.
