Frustrated with SmartConsole Upgrades

While there are so many things to like about R80, I must express how frustrating it is to upgrade the SmartConsole now. Check Point, please bring back the ability to upgrade SmartConsole without having to manually uninstall and reboot my workstation first.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

After seeing this behavior on my PC, I reached out to @Lior_Manor who manages the Deployment R&D group. They are responsible for our installer and will look into this to see how it can be improved. The goal is to remove the request for a reboot and to make sure the directory is deleted so that a new installation can happen.

Separately, as I mentioned, we are also working on an automatically updatable SmartConsole which will remove the need to deal with downloading and installing a new version altogether.

Last, I definitely want to encourage people to raise such issues on this forum. If something requires improvement, we want to know about it.

Hi Alex,

Can you share some details about which SmartConsole version you uninstalled and which you installed?

Usually, this should not require a reboot.

Separately, we are also working on an automatically updatable SmartConsole so that when we release a new version with fixes / patches, customers will get them automatically (no reboot, of course).

Thanks,

Tomer

I had to reboot when uninstalling build 33 (to install build 46) and when uninstalling build 46 (to install build 55). Workstation is Windows 10 Enterprise.

@Tomer_Noy when you uninstall SmartConsole today, the installation folder remains and is only removed when rebooting. If I need to re-install another version of the same SmartConsole, I have to reboot. Without it the installation script stops with en error.

Let me check this and see what we can do...

I can usually reinstall again without rebooting by simply renaming the folder where SmartConsole was installed.

You are very frustrated, i see that - but this has been around for over ten years now, and the ritual of uninstall - reboot - install never has changed ! So when was the good old time you had the ability to upgrade SmartConsole without having to manually uninstall and reboot the workstation first ? I never have experienced that....

R7x installations would detect when you were installing a newer build of the same version and install as an update.
