I believe the underlying reason is that the 3900 series is Check Point's first attempt at using ARM architecture hardware. Back when the 3900 was released in Q2 2025 (during the R82 era), it couldn't be used as a Standalone unit because the Management (SMS) code is x86/x64 based. This resulted in R82-era SMS managing the specialized R82.10 ARM appliances.

Now that the ARM firmware has been optimized and the maintrain R82.10 is officially GA, Check Point is pushing for unification. The Take 22 mentioned in the SK was just a transitional phase.

One important thing missing from the email is the SMS requirement. Since you are upgrading the gateway to the latest R82.10, you definitely need to schedule an upgrade for your SMS to R82.10 as well.

Hey Chris,

Just wanted to apologize (as I always do when Im wrong) and I was 100% wrong. As @Timothy_Hall , I totally confused R82.10 with R81.20. I just saw an email from customer and it clearly shows on the screenshot that all 3 3920 fws are on R82.10

What is the situation with support? All of the 3900 appliances (based on https://www.checkpoint.com/support-services/support-life-cycle-policy/) only support R82.10, it seems a very odd move to release new hardware that runs an operating system still classified as early availability. Will they get the same priority as R82 and R81.20 for JHF updates? As of today there is only a single JHF (22) for the 3900 appliances (https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk183557).
