Yeah I assume these recommendations include disk space for logging or something. Else they don't make much sense at all. Maybe someone from CP can clarify what this is based on or how this should be intepreted.

Hi guys,

On a MDS Gaia initial setup, I find this:

How do I size this? Shall I size based on my logs requirements and the auto assigned size for system-root will be fine? Or there is a minimum size for system-root that I have to take into account?

Regards,

Hi @fjulianom,

You will have SmartLog server?

If not, the 20 GB-s for the logs is nothing 🙂

A rule of thumb is -> you need as many free space as the SYStem partition size. This needed for upgrade (when the auto-snapshot happens)

Overall, you can extend the volumes anytime you want.

Here is the SK: https://support.checkpoint.com/results/sk/sk94671

Hi Akos,

No, I don't have a SmartLog server. That's screenshot is only an example for knowing I am talking about. I will have around 1.5 TB for logs, so I will give a 2 TB disk. With this, the default values Gaia gives for a 2 TB disk are:

And when assigning 1.5 TB for logs, the system-root changes to:

Will this be fine?

For MDS you need alot of space in root partition, I would not go under 100Gb

Hi guys,

Thank you for your recommendations. @Martin_Raska it makes sense what you say since I checked my current MDS disk space and has 100 GB in root partition. But is there any official documentation where I can find this recommendation? Some times when I open a TAC case to ask about these things they reject it because is not a technical issue.

Yes, I am clear about that, I see those values. But those values are for free disk space (whole disk?), but what value for system-root partition size? You must configure this value in the inital setup:

Hi,

No, that's not the right image. The following is the right one:

A disk of 2 TB and system-root of 300 GB. And this gives me a maximum of 914 GB for logs partition. Then, when the document says "Recommended 1 TB for the disk.", does it mean recommended 1 TB for system-root partition?

Regards,

That should be OK. You can add disk for the LOG almost anytime.

Hi,

I have a meeting with PS yesterday and confirmed the free disk space indicated in the release notes corresponds to the System-root partition space, and, the system automatically reserves the same size aproximately for upgrades, as @AkosBakos said in a previous post. I have made a test. A disk of 2 TB, and I have allocated 500 GB for System-root, the system don't let me put more than 254 GB for the logs partition, because it selects at least 1230 GB for Backup and upgrade, as you can see here:

After the installation, I have checked with lvm_manager, and I have seen the following:

I see the 1230 GB of Backup and upgrade partition during the Gaia initial setup corresponds to 550 GB of Upgrade itself, and 680 GB of Unallocated space. Then, I think if I want to put a 2 TB disk, and 500 GB for system-root and the rest for the Logs partition, the only thing I can do is install the system and after the installation, move all the space from the Unallocated space to lv_log through lvm_manager. Is that right?

Regards,

In my experience you don't need that much for the root partition. 100GB root should be plenty for 2 domains. I have an MDS here running 2 domains on a 75G root and it's only 49% full after a year of runnign and keeping up with regular jumbo's. Another 2 domain MDS is running 50G root with 54% used space, but that's only been recently installed.
