CP R81 Installation

Hello,

I am very new to security and I am hoping someone could help me out.

I am taking a course on CP R81 and I have downloaded an ISO image to install so I can lab things out and follow along. I do not have a CP hardware box, so I am looking to install it on a computer.

At first, I tried installing it on VirtualBox but the installation would always fail. I then switched to VMWare Workstation 17(Free version). It seems to install but it does not come up looking like any of the videos I have been watching and it does not seem to really work. I know I am generalizing but I want to be brief if I can.

My laptop has 18G RAM and about 200G hard drive, so I have enough space. I have virtualization enabled in the Bios, so that is not the issue. I have been on YouTube quite a bit and and I cannot seem to find a solution.

What are the benefits of installing R81 on a VM? Could I install it directly on Windows 11 environment?

Any help would be appreciated.

The first thing I advise you is to go over the relevant chapters in Check Point for Beginners:

You can not install it directly on Windows but you can install it on the machine itself but it will wipe out the current installation. That's why using a virtual environment is the best course when starting.

Regarding your specific problem, after the installation of the ISO, did you run from a browser the First Time Configuration Wizard to configure the machine as a Security Management Server?
