Unfortunately if it's not on the HCL it's not certified/garunteed to work in a supported manner least not without ESXi on top.

With that said R81.20 has a newer kernel/drivers so may have marginally better compatibility though this does not automatically provide HCL inclusion.

Does anybody have experience with Dell BOSS or BOSS-S2 controllers as a disk to install a gateway on?

Does this work?

In theory Gaia should just see a AHCI disk...

Are you trying R81.20 or some other version, and which Dell server and is the same present on the HCL?

At this time i am exploring options.

I have two openserver-gateways with next to no disk activity. Plan is to update the hardware to a current Dell server from the HCL.

The HCL lists "oversized" and overly expensive Raid controllers, that i really dont need. The big question is, if BOSS would work.

Currently this cluster is at R81.10.
