You can upgrade via CPUSE, but there is one good argument for doing a fresh install.
It will allow you to use the more efficient/faster xfs filesystem.
This process requires different partitioning which can only be achieved through a fresh install.

In the case of a Management HA config, a fresh install of the secondary management server is necessary.
This is due to the underlying differences in how the data is stored and synced.

Hello All,

Can you advise me, i have read various docs on Checkpoints website & various knowledge boards.

I my initial understanding is that if i wanted to upgrade from R77.30 to R80.30 i would have to build a new server & run through the upgrade verifier, export & import database steps.

But as i have started to read more there seems to be a straightforward upgrade path via CPUSE. Or am i reading the the documentation wrong.

Thanks for any advise

Extract from Installation and Upgrade Guide R80.30

From R7X to R80.30:

Upgrade the Primary Security Management Server.

Perform a clean install of the Secondary Security Management Server.

Connect the Secondary Security Management Server to the Primary Security Management Server.

Step 2. Why ???? there is no explanation

Please first explain your current deployment - Upgrade path from R77.30 to R80.30 maybe different for GW or SMS and also according to the used hardware. Usually, the Upgrade Wizard shows the needed steps and packages for upgrades.

Your presented extract is somewhat puzzling without any context...

Hello G W Albrecht

Well i know we can direclty upgrade to R80.30 from R77.30 as i have looked on Checkpoints upgrade path.

I am mainly talking about the Management Server, (it is standalone, single management server) it is all ready on the Gaia OS on an Open Server, plenty of space & CPU & memory. (I believe i understand that the gateways can directly be upgraded without issues.)

I have run through the wizard already & it generates the file needed, i have also run the upgrade verifier on the management system, it spits a few problems (i expected more) but these can easily fixed & i am tidying up the database in general.

In various upgrade videos i have seen suggest because the database is built differently in R80.30 that is why a new server is suggested ??

Am i reading more into the upgrade path than is necessary !!
