gaia api commands not found

I am attempting to use the gaia_api for the first time however no matter what command I try to access, I get "Requested API command: [insert command here] not found". Anyone else run into this and anyone know the solution?

Did you actually enable the API?
It's only integrated in R80.40 and not enabled by default, if I recall correctly.
In R80.10-R80.30, it must be explicitly installed.

yes I did. Finally figured out later in the day what was going on. in the request I had "data={'user': user, 'password ': password}" instead of "json={'user': user, 'password ': password}".
